✦ AUGHTY ✦ Aalglatt 22 AUGHTY There is a moment when you file the accommodation request. You expect someone to read it and say we got you, we'll find a way. Nobody says it. Not falsely. Not at all. German has a word for what happens instead. Aalglatt. AALGLATT. Aal — eel. Glatt — smooth. Aalglatt describes someone whose words are as hard to grip as an eel — phrased to commit to nothing, shaped to slip past being held to anything. → slides past Sentences engineered to be unquotable. Commitments engineered to commit to nothing. Acknowledgments sympathy-shaped but acknowledging no fact. It is a trait of cowardice and insincerity. Not bluntly dishonest — too careful for that. More like dishonesty that has lawyered itself. English approximations (slippery, evasive, non-committal) all undershoot the same way: they describe a tactic. Aalglatt is a disposition. THE NINE DOTS. A puzzle: connect all nine dots using four straight lines. Without lifting the pen. Without retracing. the box that wasn't in the puzzle Most people, given the puzzle, draw a box around the dots before they begin. Not on paper. In their heads. The box is invisible to them. Then they try to solve the puzzle within the box. The puzzle has no solution within the box. The puzzle did not include a box. The lines go outside. Some of us see this immediately. Some of us see only this. The box is what other people built for themselves. We are not in it because we never made it. WHY THIS WORKS ON US. The reason the aalglatt response lands at all is that we trust. We assume good faith. We expect that filing a request will be received in kind. We are called naive, unguarded, sometimes childlike. These descriptions are not wrong. They are also not insults. Good-faith assumption is a feature of the cognition. Gestalt thinking does not pre-filter for malice; the puzzle drop arrives unsorted. We extend trust because the cognition does not invent reasons not to. The same openness that makes the work possible makes the betrayal possible. WHAT IT COSTS. Being met with aalglatt is hurtful in a specific way. Not the way criticism is hurtful. Not the way disagreement is hurtful. It is the hurt of being treated as not real enough to be addressed directly. I have been told I am not autistic. By people who had not read what I filed. It is as hostile to this condition as any other prejudice — quieter, but the same shape. I have cried about this. I have been angry about this. Anger is just sadness's kid. Same chemistry, looking for a different exit. That this hurts is not a defect. It is evidence the cognition was working. German has a phrase: über seinen Schatten springen — to hop over your own shadow. You do not need the shadow to disappear. You need only to be willing to hop. There is nothing wrong with you. Read that line again. This comic exists because someone hopped from a corner. The corner produced this comic. As the shadows grow bigger, I learnt to hop wider. I keep on hopping until I have liftoff. I wonder if an employer reading this is as confident about their ability to fly too. Nine dots. Four lines. The puzzle did not include a box. Most people draw one anyway. Then they ask why the puzzle has no solution.
